Breast Cancer Makeover
Breast Cancer Screening Campaign
Early detection can help save lives
Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women around the world, with 1 in 8 women affected in their lifetime. The survival rates for breast cancer vary dramatically across the globe; ranging from 80% or over in developed countries to 40% in developing countries. The low survival rates in developing poverty-stricken countries are due to the lack of access to medical care and the financial implications of treatment. Breast cancer is therefore detected at a much later stage, resulting in inevitable mortality. Access to early detection programs can help change this harsh reality. Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Breast Cancer Support is an international charity that provides much needed help, support and care to breast cancer patients who cannot afford screening or treatment. Our key objective this October is to raise funds to help save the lives of many. We aim to help breast cancer patients through funding treatment and early detection and intervention through our screening program.
The World’s BIGGEST breast cancer screening campaign in the developing world
Breast Cancer Support has been working on collaborative projects around the globe for the early detection of breast cancer. We are helping increase breast cancer awareness through our screening program, especially to those in poverty-stricken countries who do not have access to medical care, due to the lack of facilities and financial means. With the use of the iBreastExam screening device, we aim to help increase breast cancer survival rates through early detection.
The iBreastExam is a battery-operated wireless screening device, that can be taken anywhere easily. It does not replace a mammogram. As it is a cost effective, easy to use, portable hand-held device; its reach is immense. It can be used by a non-physician health worker who can reach out to a large number of women in poverty-stricken villages and societies. It can also be used by a physician in a primary health care setting to aid an initial breast examination. This screening process does not involve any pain or radiation. The device uses a new sensor technology that can detect the health of the breast for a mere fraction of the cost of a mammogram.
The iBreastExam device connects itself to a smart phone or tablet and starts the breast examination. The nurse moves the device to different areas of the breast to check for any abnormalities and tumours. The sensors measure tissue elasticity non-invasively.If an abnormality is detected, this is highlighted immediately, and within minutes test results can be seen on the tablet. If the test results are positive, the highlighted area can be checked further through ultrasound to determine if a biopsy or further diagnostic investigations are required.
According to clinical trials, the iBreastExam is 19% more accurate than a doctor’s physical examination. It is also reported that the iBreastExam is 86% more likely to detect a knot in the breast than a mammogram. For the detection of breast cancer, the device has sensitivity of 84% and specificity of 94%.
We need your help
With your help, Breast Cancer Support aim to protect women and their families from unwarranted physical and mental trauma associated with breast cancer. Your donation will help us to save lives through early detection with our screening program. This will enable us to significantly reduce costs associated with treatment, increase treatment options and thus greatly reducing mortality rates.
Get involved and make a big difference this October. Donating as little as one pound, can make a big difference to someone’s life. One pound of your donation will fund breast screening for one individual. With your support we can expand our efforts to one million women worldwide, making this the world’s BIGGEST breast cancer screening campaign in the developing world. With your help, our reach is immense.
